Derek Johnson is the executive director of the Charles Koch Institute. In this role, he oversees partnerships with a range of grantees, research and development of policy and community advancements, multiple educational programs, and civil discourse initiatives all designed around important issues impacting society, including free speech, foreign policy, criminal justice reform, K-12 education, technology and innovation, and poverty.

Johnson has served in various leadership positions for more than a decade with both the Charles Koch Institute (CKI) and Charles Koch Foundation (CKF). In those roles of increasing responsibility, he has helped to grow the Koch Internship and Associate Programs while expanding the quantity and quality of post-secondary education grants.

Prior to joining CKI and CKF, he was a research fellow at the Institute for Political Economy at Utah State University, where he earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in political science.

Johnson currently serves as Chairman of the Board for the VELA Education Fund, and on the boards of directors of the Center for Growth and Opportunity at Utah State University and Yes. Every Kid.
